The Little Painter’s Art Dictionary

A digital dictionary I built for my niece that explains art concepts with spoken pronunciations and example sentences.

The dictionary’s home page: a pencil drawing of an open notebook and pencil, with the title “The Little Painter’s Art Dictionary”

What need did it start from?

My niece has a special interest in drawing and art. I opened this dictionary to support that interest and keep her excited about it: a place where she can discover the words of art in a calm notebook that feels close to her own world.

My approach

I built it around the feel of pencil and paper, so the interface looks like a sketchbook. Every word comes with a meaning, an example sentence and a spoken pronunciation. Words follow Turkish alphabetical order, and search respects the Turkish I/İ distinction. The recordings are used with her family’s permission.

The solution

The site is written in plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with no framework or external library. Words and site copy live in JSON files, so adding a new word never means touching the code. The dictionary logic is tested with Node.js’s built-in test runner. There is no database, account or analytics; everything runs in the browser.

Where it stands

The dictionary is live and started with 32 words. It will grow up alongside her; over time I plan to add her own drawings too.
